What fun I had at Search Engine Strategies In New York City and it was
Free
A few weeks back I went to the Search Engine Strategies conference. Since
it was in my home city and didn't cost me anything like airfare or a hotel I
figure I get an exhibit pass and check it out. I didn't go to any of the
sessions just walked around and talked to some of the people in the booths.
I am sure it was worth the price to go to the sessions I just didn't have
the time that day.
These booths really didn't do anything for me as they were mostly pay per
click companies and I really don't use them or need them so it was kind of a
waste. I did have some fun asking totally stupid questions just to see what
their answers would be.
As I was walking past one of the booths a young man stopped me, kind of
blocked my path as if he was trained to do that. I was the fresh meat I
guess, well that didn't happen. This young man must have just been out of
college and this was his first day on the job or something.
He tells me really quick all about his company and that they can get me to
the top of the search engines. That is the biggest red flag that you can get
when someone makes a promise to get you to the top. Well this is where the
fun starts, I tell him that I don't need pay per click since I am already at
the top of the search engines and I get too much traffic as it is.
I wish I had a camera with me as his face totally turned white and had this
dumbfounded look and he didn't know what to say. His next line really took
the cake "What is your strategy to get high in the search engines?"
That's right I am suppose to tell someone at a search engine conference what
my tricks (white hat of course) are for getting to the top of the search
engines. I tried my hardest but I just started to laugh right in the poor
guys face and walked away as fast as I could. That poor guy is still shaking
his head as he thought he had a sale with me.
That wasn't the only fun I had as I walked around I went to the booth that
was set up by Google. I took some brochures and read up on a few things and
as I was standing there I just happen to see a few people doing the same
thing as me, so I asked out a question out loud. "What is Google and why
would I let these people on my site? What do they do?" I even mispronounced
Google to sound like Goggles lol. Well you should have seen the guys face
standing next to me it was priceless. My friend that was next to me couldn't
hold back her laughter and had to walk away ASAP as this wasn't planned at
all.
I did similar stuff at the AOL booth and the Msn adcenter booth. There was a
few things that I did that was helpful. I signed up for a few magazines for
free that I browsed through at the booth. Website magazine is really a good
magazine to read as it has valuable information towards websites and stuff.
I recommend you get yourself a free subscription to
Website Magazine and join there affiliate program also.
Now you may be saying to yourself why did Vinny make this page and place
it on the site instead of on the blog?
When I woke up this morning I read an email from my buddy
Gary Antosh over at web
content made easy. It was all about drawing the reader into your site
with compelling content. I wanted to get you reading and show you the power
of compelling content. If you made it this far on the page then I guess that
worked.
